HISTORY OF SUSULÁ

The toponym Susulá comes from the Mayan words Zuzul Ha, meaning "soft water," according to the Calepino dictionary of Motul. However, during the colonial period, the Spanish transcribed it phonetically in documents, and even in 17th-century documents, the place was called Zuzulha. It was common for colonial haciendas to retain the original Mayan toponym, associating it with a Catholic saint; in this case, the hacienda was registered as Santo Domingo de Zuzulha.

With the establishment of the Governorate of Yucatán in 1565, obtaining permits from the Crown to occupy lands and introduce livestock was simplified. The ancient Mayan lands called Zuzulha were granted through an initial concession in 1570, during the 16th century. Currently, archaeology identifies the pre-Hispanic site known as Xamán Susulá, which covers a large area near the ancient city of Caucel.

During the second half of the 18th century, the first stage of the Yucatecan hacienda emerged: the cattle-ranch hacienda, as this combination of agriculture and livestock farming constituted its main productive activity. Due to its proximity to the capital, Susulá was one of the first haciendas to transform into such, since its rural population was larger than that of haciendas farther from Mérida, which resulted in high production of corn, honey, wax, and other agricultural products.
